The Clockmakers
The sky is always running late
An order of keepers, astronomers and mechanics, founded in 0 AE, on the first day of the Perpetual Equinox, by the Twelve of the First Winding under Master Agulha. They had a single task: to watch over the Celestial Astrolabe, correcting it every time the sky fell a hair behind. They did not build it, nor design it, nor fully understand it: they inherited it from the Ancients along with instructions, and for a thousand years did what the instructions said. About three hundred at the start, there is only one Clockmaker today, Master Halvar.
“Everything can be changed. The question is always what breaks when you change it.” To Auren they were hated for a simple version of their doctrine, that a still sky was a blessing; the deeper one is that the Equinox was “neither a blessing nor a curse but a decision”, with a price: nothing died violently, but nothing grew.
