The Ancients
Those who held up the sky
A vanished people, the builders of the Celestial Astrolabe. No one living knows how many they were, who led them, or where they came from; they left ruins all along the Line. Their age ends with the Astrolabe, at the beginning of the Equinox, and they built it so that the Tide would not exist.
Their books are written in a language Halvar says he “reads badly and understands worse”: in Auren they are read as prophecy, in Nocturna as a manual, and in the tower as a debt. They gave the Sun and the Moon the names Solaris and Noctra. Two of their greatest works still work: the Meridian Pillar and the Celestial Circle.
