Character · The Temple of the Zenith
Edrin
The rooftop boy
Edrin is fourteen: small, wiry and restless, always barefoot, with an impish grin and a gap between his front teeth. At thirteen he became the Cloister’s bell-ringer’s apprentice, and he lived on the roofs. He is Sera’s younger brother and, with Teo, “family by mathematics”.
He dies in the Breaking, on day one. Since then he is an Echo: Sera sees him on the infirmary roof on the second night, and when the priests’ light pushes him out of Auren he drifts to the Vale of Echoes, where he stands on the tallest stone on the slope. The starless thing has looked at him.
